Smart Glasses for Visually Impaired Users
A system aiming to turn ESP32-CAM images into spoken descriptions through Firebase and an Android app.
The need
Develop a portable system to describe the surroundings or objects viewed by a visually impaired user through AI-assisted spoken responses.
My contribution
For my 2023–2024 undergraduate project at KTÜ, supervised by Assoc. Prof. Önder Aydemir, I brought together ESP32-CAM image capture, Firebase upload, server-side image description and spoken output in an Android app.
The solution
The poster documents the image → text → speech workflow and Android response examples. Hardware comprises ESP32-CAM, a trigger button, battery, boost converter and TP4056 charging module. It acknowledges TÜBİTAK 2209-A support.
Key features
- ESP32-CAM image capture and upload to Firebase
- Android workflow converting image descriptions from text to speech
- Button, battery, boost and TP4056 charging modules
- TÜBİTAK 2209-A support acknowledged in the project poster
2023–2024 undergraduate project
Karadeniz Technical University. Student: Eyyüphan Çakır; supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Önder Aydemir. The supplied project poster acknowledges TÜBİTAK 2209-A support.
Ongoing graduate research
Separate from this undergraduate project, my graduate research at Giresun University has been ongoing since January 2025. It focuses on hardware architecture, system optimisation and firmware integration using STM32 and ESP32-S3.
Technical approach
Give the camera, server and Android app distinct responsibilities: the glasses capture the image, the server generates a description and the app delivers a spoken response. Button activation and battery power support the goal of portable use.
Technical details are drawn from my supplied 2023–2024 project poster. The 3D glasses are illustrative and are not the prototype’s actual CAD model.
