ANDROID NOTE

What should an interface show offline?

A data and interface question inspired by the weather app.

For changing data such as weather, a value being present on screen does not mean it is current. A useful interface communicates connection state and the age of data as clearly as the data itself.

The weather project combines a Kotlin and Jetpack Compose interface, API access and a Room cache. The cache stores the most recently fetched data; it does not create a new forecast when the connection is absent.

Three states deserve separate treatment: fresh data is available, saved data is being shown, or no data is available yet. Keeping those states distinct matters particularly for chart and map screens.

The portfolio device showcase uses real screenshots. Its short visual tour is assembled from those screenshots; it is not a live recording of the application or a new weather-data service.
